The books say that babies start smiling from between 4 and 8 weeks onwards. Well we hit the 8 week mark with Nicky and by that stage he was doing a few smiles every now and then, but not too many. In about the second week of April, Nicky and I journeyed back to Sydney for two weeks. It was a spur of the moment decision to go. I had been missing home and having close friends and family around to support me when Nicky was Mr Cranky Pants, and so off we went. Kristian & the Poodles had to stay home unfortunately as Kristian could not get time off work at such short notice. Nicky was 9 weeks old when we left and about 11 weeks old when we returned to Singapore.
Of course I had approached the plane trip with a fair amount of trepidation (I afterall had been one of those people who, when placed in the "baby section" had thought, oh [expletive] not the baby section!!!!). Anyway, my fears were unfounded because Nicky actually did a marathon sleep of about 7 hours straight (his own personal best) and didn't wake up until we arrived home at Mum and Dad's.
It was lovely being back in Sydney and catching up with friends and of course spending time with Mum and Dad. And a wonderous thing happened...Nicky started smiling ALL THE TIME!! It was so lovely that he was reacting to me and the other people around him. It was like he had discovered the power of his smile, and he couldn't get enough of it! He was hooked!
The trip back to Singapore was quite good as well, although Nicky did start to go a bit feral during the last two hours of the flight. However there was another baby on board who was louder than him so it was ok! And luckily the plane was half an hour early!
I don't know what it was, the sunny Sydney weather, being at Dumbarton St (my parents' place) or what, but during his two week stay in Sydney Nicky started to become a lot more settled and content with the world around him. It was wonderful - Mr Cranky Pants had disappeared and had been replaced by Mr Smiley. Some peace had finally returned to the Daw/Robinson household.
